More then a Sea of tears, can show

Title:

A Song for a Play. Alcander to Melinda.

Primary Text:

MS Folger, 28 (in Folger this song precedes the above one by Melinda).

Secondary Ed:

1903 Reynolds prints Folger text, 127-8 (she has this song precedes Melinda's, as in Folger); rpt of 1903 Reynolds: 1930 Fausset, 59.

Comment:

This is the answer to Finch's youthful "Melinda to Alcander:" "Witt, as free, and unconfin'd" (written 1683-89, at least 11 years earlier and found in MS Finch-Hatton all alone); here Alcander counters that since Melinda has such strength of wit, such powerful beauty and eyes, she must believe he is constant. It is a softer poem than the earlier one, and may record a moment between an older Heneage and Anne.
