Within a Meadow, on the way
Title:
The MAN and his HORSE.
Primary Text:
No MS; 1713 Misc, 258-9.
Secondary Ed:
rpt of 1713: 1903 Reynolds, 205-6.
Source:
La Fontaine, "Le Veillard et l'ane," VI, 10, 160; also the opening few lines and moral of "Le Cheval S'Etant Voulu Benger du Cerf," IV, 13, 120.
Comment:
Finch elaborates two verse paragraphs into homey realistic stanzas, to produce a lively, wry country-pastoral, with sympathy for the horse as a much-abused animal.
