Who is this from Edom moves?
Title:
The following poem is taken from the Epistle for the monday before Easter. Primary Text:
MS Wellesley, 113-4. Secondary Ed:
1988 Ellis d'Alessandro prints Wellesley text, 145-6; McGovern & Hinnant, 97-98. Source:
Isaiah 63:1, in Book of Common Prayer a Holy-Day following the last Sunday before Easter, a morning prayer. Comment:
This is a very free adapation. Anne turns the Biblical verses into concise dramatic narrative between Christ and Church in which she softens or mitigates original harshness of Old Testament by emphasizing Christ's love in his act of redemption, e.g., her close: "Thee I to my house will bring." The use of a direct dialogue of octosyllabic couplets is effective.
Date:
As this poem follows the series of meditations in February 1719, I suggest later that spring.
