Wonder not Madam, that the Muses pay
Title:
An Elegy. From the Muses at Parnassus (a Hill so called in Eastwell Park). To the Right Honorable the Lady Maidston on my Lord Winchilsea's Birthday [MS F-H Table: A Elegy on my Lord Winchilsea's Birth Day] Primary Texts:
MS's: F-H 283, 121-24; Folger, 14. Secondary Ed:
1903 Reynolds prints Folger text, 32-3. Comment:
Madam is Elizabeth Wyndham Finch, Lady Maidstone, the wife of the second earl's eldest son who died in 1672; the Lord is Charles Finch, now the 3rd Earl; lines 19-22 allude to or imitate the Edilium he and she has just written together (see directly below); Finch assumes Lady Maidstone will be surprized to find she is a poet; this is a poem in praise of Heneage's nephew.
