Index of Articles and Notices in East-Central Intelligencer, N.S. Volumes 16-18, 2002-2004
[Published in The East-Central Intelligencer, n.s. 19, no. 1 (January 2005), 1-32.]
This index records the articles, reviews, lists, editorials, and lengthy notices within the 2002-2004 volumes of The East-Central Intelligencer (new series, Vols. 16-18). During these years three numbers were issued, usually late in the month of their nominal dates, January, May, and September. Indices were previously compiled for n.s., Vols. 1-5 (published in the May 1992 Intelligencer [6.ii.30-41]); for n.s., 6-10 (in September 1996 [10.iii.{49-61}]); and for n.s., 11-15 (in September 2001 [15.iii {54-72}]).
Two indices follow, one of contents by title & topic and sometimes author (for books reviewed), and the other of contributors. When titles are not sufficiently revealing, the article is indexed under a topic, rather than a title. Many articles are multiply listed under different topics, and some cross-referencing occurs. In the contents' list, items are arranged chronologically (by the issue date) and then by their place in that issue. Since our issues do not have continuous pagination, their numbers have had to be included. The citation has the form: volume number in arabic, issue number in lower-case roman, the year whenever reference shifts to a new volume, and then the page numbers. The index usually omits the brief mention of members, changes to the directory, and some short (usually redundant) notices as of grants and meetings. Readers will remember that the Intelligencer always lists news of members, the meetings of ASECS affiliated organizations, and recurring grant and seminar deadlines. Accounts or reviews of books are usually indexed under the book's author's name, but collections and annual journals are sometimes listed by their titles; books are usually also indexed under a field or topic as well. The book reviewers' names are indexed in the contributors list. Items without authorial ascription were typically written by the editor. "Conference" is abbreviated "conf."; both "review" and "reviewed" are abbreviated "rev."; and "est." abbreviates "establish" and variants of that root. The index contains corrections to the original issues: although there's no room for a full list of spelling errors known to me, some major blunders are corrected below, as in the entry "Handbuch."
I hope this index makes back-issues more valuable--readers who have Vols. 16-18 will be able to find quickly the names and addresses of many fellowships, journals, newsletters, and societies. But the roughly 80 persons noted in the contributors index should also call attention to how consistently our newsletter has been a collaborative effort, well supported by members and non-members alike. In celebrating that cooperation in 1992, I noted that we then had 250 readers and our issues were regularly over 36 pages long. Those figures provide a good benchmark: for eight years we have held on to about 450 readers including a growing number of libraries (this figure does not include the 20 organizations to which complimentary copies are sent, sometimes in exchange). And the issues have averaged over 70 pages. During that period the regular annual dues have remained at $10 ($5 for graduate students and $15 for couples). The dues rate has been kept low in part due to roughly $900-1000 annually received for printing subvention from several offices at Penn State University, in particular from the DuBois Campus's Academic Affairs Director (currently Robert Loeb); the Department of English (currently chaired by Robert Caserio); the Director of the Center for the Study of the History of the Book, James L. West, III; and the Commonwealth College (Sandra Gleason, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs).
I hope that those who are new members--or old members who've never contributed,--while reading over the title and topic index, will think of something they might contribute. Submissions are preferred on diskette in WordPerfect 5.1 for DOS or an early version of IBM-formatted Word or as email attachments in Word or WordPerfect (but not the most recent versions). I'm still writing and compiling the issues in WordPerfect 5.1 on DOS and converting to Word before producing printer's copy. All new series volumes have been printed by Action Graphics of Clearfield. We are eager to review members' books; however, we need authors to assist by obtaining review copies. The newsletter is not copyright protected, and other newsletters in 18th-century studies do sometimes reprint articles and notes originating here.
Finally, only a few back issues remain. But both the Clark Library and Penn State's Rare Books Department have runs of new series volumes 1-18 (Delaware has destroyed or misplaced Ted Braun's deposited run of all EC/ASECS newsletters). On request, I will gladly xerox and send out copies of particular articles.--James E. May
