When I consider the hallowed burning

When I consider the hallowed burning
light, God's presence, that force that can shape thought,
and awaken, rouse the heart to courage,
to acts beyond human strength to bear by

instilling nobility and virtue
in the soul, I gather, fix, concentrate
her desires so His light absorbs them,
but alas am weak and limited by

what I feel and understand of this light.
Thus the chosen soul can only achieve
what her Author has been pleased to allow.

Blest mercy. The race is not to the skilled
or the active, they run safest and best
who are protected and sustained by God.
